A Parent Perspective

In 2022, K.H. reached out to the Dyslexia Alliance for Black Children. It was early in her child's dyslexia diagnosis, and she was searching for resources and support. After receiving parent coaching, K.H. is now helping other families as a volunteer and parent coach herself.

“I am the parent of an 11-year-old dyslexic son. I felt isolated and alone. My friends all bragged about their kids’ awards and achievements, while my son had been struggling since first grade.

This training has been helpful when dealing with my son’s school and handling stressful Individualized Education Program meetings. It was only accessible to me because there was no charge. Children are expensive, but children with special needs are extremely expensive.

It has been amazing to find a community that understands the joys and struggles of parenting a dyslexic child, particularly a Black dyslexic child.” — K.H., parent of a child with dyslexia
