FAMILIES-AS-TUTORS PROGRAM
More than 60% of Dyslexia Alliance for Black Children families want to learn how to better support their children at home, especially given barriers like inconsistent school support and the high cost of private tutoring. Our Families-As-Tutors program was developed to provide hands-on training parents need to effectively tutor their children at home.
HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS
Families-As-Tutors is a 6-hour phonics instruction training that focuses on the "how" and "why" of the five pillars of reading, which families can support at home:
1. Phonemic Awareness: Understanding and working with sounds in spoken words.
2. Phonics: Connecting sounds to letters to build reading skills.
3. Fluency: Reading with speed, accuracy, and expression.
4. Vocabulary: Building word knowledge for better understanding.
5. Comprehension: Making sense of what is read and drawing meaning.
With private tutoring in major cities averaging $150 per hour, our Families-As-Tutors program offers an affordable and flexible way to support your children at home.
